Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Paul McCann from Cavan, has been playing in various bands since 1996, including Aine Cahill’s band along with the power pop band The Plan and also the Johnny Cash tribute Get Rhythm. No stranger to the live scene, McCann has performed with Pugwash, The Strypes, Duncan Maitland (Picturehouse) and Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson Band/Beach Boys), among others.
‘Keep The Devil Within’ is the first single to be taken from McCann’s forthcoming album titled ‘Here Comes The Rapture’ released later this year. An extremely talented musician, McCann plays most of the instrumentation on the album, including – Vocals, Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Electric Bass, Double Bass, Slide Guitar, Piano, Mellotron, Harmonica, Kazoo and Trumpet!
‘Keep The Devil Within’ is pure pop rock, with an infectious, upbeat chorus and guitar driven hooks throughout. McCann says of the track “It’s about the complications of love and relationships. We don’t always bring out the best in each other and maybe we are better off going our separate ways and burying this love (or keeping the devil within). The concept for the video was conceived by the director Eamon Cahill. It was a lot of fun to shoot, despite spending the best part of a day in a straitjacket”. Keep an eye out for Aine Cahill who also appears in the video.
2015 saw Paul release his highly-acclaimed debut EP ‘The Magician’ which was recorded and mixed at JAM Studio’s with Martin Quinn co-producing. Following this, he released ‘Beginning To End’, an EP comprised of home recordings. The two self-produced EPs, demonstrate a maturity in both writing and technique as McCann delved into new musical territories. McCann has a diverse mix of influences, ranging from The Divine Comedy to Jack White, Johnny Cash to Ash. Keep your eyes peeled for some live Irish shows throughout the coming months.
